We also certainly lucked out with some very generous donations of used batteries.

I don't use a pack voltmeter. Not really necessary since the LED array essentially shows you more valuable voltage information. I'd recommend it even with new batteries, because they will not be perfectly balanced even in the beginning, and will drift further apart over time. You need to know which one is the weakest under load to keep from murdering it.
