The manual in it is probably a T-5. That's probably a good choice for this project.
A T-5 is light and easy to shift and probably A-OK for the torque a 617 puts out.
Although they are "throwaways" cheaper to replace than fix, there are probably a zillion of them out in junk yards, so if yours conks out, not that pricey to replace.
