Try it without the defroster on, floor vents only. In my ZX2, whenever the a/c compressor runs (like in defrost mode), the engine cooling fan came on. I disconnected the wire to the compressor and it still did it. I pulled the a/c fuse and now it only comes on when it gets hot enough.
