It is not legal to have no externally mounted mirrors according to the FMVSS. (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards). Your state may not enforce those rules, but they aren't just suggestions, either. There is no way you can maintain the (ridiculous, unnecessary) field of view required by federal law with an internally mounted mirror on the sides.
Nobody said the O2 was a safety issue, I said to fix safety issues before worrying about your fuel economy.
