I coast with the engine on. I shift it into neutral and the rpms drop to 6-700rpm. My mpg onboard sytem goes thru the roof. the grapevine coasting has added 1 to 1.5mpg on my overall trip from sacramento to la .
I have 185000 miles on this particular car and the transmission is still going strong ( very regular service of fluids).
I have used coasting ever since I had a 66 mustang automatic back in 1977.
