If it was a stick, you could find out the DFCO (deceleration fuel cut-off) RPM and keep it in a gear that stays above that RPM. Engine braking, full power steering and brakes, and NO FUEL CONSUMED.

I wonder if autos do this also? My guess is that the auto would upshift to bring the RPMs down, which would disable DFCO, .

In my case, I don't think a '90 Accord would have DFCO. (My long-awaiting-final-assembly MPGuino would know for sure.) Of course, the other problem is that, at least for the couple of times I've tried it, I almost never needed engine braking, and if I left it in gear, I'd have to do some acceleration in some of the more gentle flat-to-uphill parts around Gorman.

I coast with the engine on. I shift it into neutral and the rpms drop to 6-700rpm. My mpg onboard sytem goes thru the roof. the grapevine coasting has added 1 to 1.5mpg on my overall trip from sacramento to la .
I have 185000 miles on this particular car and the transmission is still going strong ( very regular service of fluids).
I have used coasting ever since I had a 66 mustang automatic back in 1977.
