Usually, if you get the GM/Nissan ones, they're the complete unit, which only require to be installed and wired in.

All GM cars that had it as an option are pre-wired for it, IIRC, so they're basically (cut a hole in the dash) plug and play.

The universal ones are just a box that plugs into your data port, I think. They're like an SG2, but they display backwards, and reflect off the windshield in red.
