can the cops see your speed at night? lol.
i've thought of this many times since i use my portable GPS as a speedometer.
i was thinking the software could just produce a mirror image in the future, and i can use the same window mount since it tilts up so well.

I know this is post was awhile ago (and you've tried other ways to deal with it), but the ideas have merit so I thought I'd try to be helpful:
One source of multiple reflection would be the mirror used to reflect onto the windscreen (or other) surface. Try using a front surface mirror rather than a mirror on which the backside of the glass is aluminized. Most all of the old polaroid "swinger" type cameras have a very thin, front surface mirror inside so you can get one for $1 at yardsales & thrift stores. Film can't be got, so they're cheap. The mirror might even be flexed just a bit to correct the anamorphic distortion from the windscreen. Just a thought. Keep posting pretty pics.

I have a separate build thread. I forgot that I posted that. As I'm building the LED display as a mirrored image, I'm not using a mirror, so that eliminates that double image source.

Another positive thing is that the LED display will be pretty flexible once the finished product is running. If I don't like the windshield reflection, I can just move it closer and use the cantilevered plexiglas idea, or maybe I'll try something else.

And for diffusion, I'm using a cutout of a milk carton. I think it was a pretty thrifty idea. I'm still in the process of making the display, so this project has a long way to go =[

*edit* I've also seen window tint film applied directly to the windshield, but I'm not going to do that. I think it looks tacky.

search eBay for HUD or Head Up Display. You can usually find them from GM cars pretty cheaply, and I'd imagine one could adapt the input for whatever signal was wanted.

Or, there is a universal HUD kit on there all the time for $100 that normally displays MPH, but I'm sure it could take another signal as well.

??? does the "heads up display" include the vacuum fluorescent display? Or are they generally just the recessed mirror part? (referring to the ebay ones, I don't want a universal HUD. Maybe I'll change my tune after 20 hours working on this project.

Usually, if you get the GM/Nissan ones, they're the complete unit, which only require to be installed and wired in.

All GM cars that had it as an option are pre-wired for it, IIRC, so they're basically (cut a hole in the dash) plug and play.

The universal ones are just a box that plugs into your data port, I think. They're like an SG2, but they display backwards, and reflect off the windshield in red.

i got my wife a droid from verizon, while i hold-out for the nexus one.
i downloaded a free speedometer (gps) from the android market place.
it offers a beautiful speed HUD that;s very customizable in size, font, and colors.
it even offers classic speedometers, too, but not as useful when in HUD mode.

Hey go check out the HUDs on ebay. Just do a search for Multifunction HUD, in the automotive parts section. I'd post a link but haven't been on here enough. It takes too long to read all the information you guys have...lol. But it is excellent info and thank you for doin' it. I 'll keep reading and hopefully soon I will be able to talk on here with some intellegence.
