There's almost no limit to how fast you can go, and how much money you can spend doing it. Get a WRX or a first generation Eclipse turbo, crank up the boost, and you're in the mid 5s 0-60. The Mustangs, Camaros, and Vettes will still beat you. Get a 1000 cc sports bike, and you're in the high 2s 0-60, faster than any streetable car. But no matter how fast you go, someone else will be faster. I like the mileage game, because I'm only competing against myself. AFAIK, no one gets better mpg driving an SE-R or an xB.
