Your Dad might be easier to convince if your solution is cheap and reversible.Try a roll of office-grade bubble wrap, cut to fit each pane, affixed by just wiping a moist cloth over the glass and gently pressing on the wrap. I've got double-sided windows and I still achieved roughly 3-4% difference in efficiency from last year. Best $17 I ever spent!
Also, have your parents wrapped the water heater? Big savings there.
