Your Dad might be easier to convince if your solution is cheap and reversible.Try a roll of office-grade bubble wrap, cut to fit each pane, affixed by just wiping a moist cloth over the glass and gently pressing on the wrap. I've got double-sided windows and I still achieved roughly 3-4% difference in efficiency from last year. Best $17 I ever spent!

Also, have your parents wrapped the water heater? Big savings there.

... more on the subject matter; can it be cost effective to build your own panels? I tons of stuff on Ebay and several youtube videos showing how people have made their own. If I consider my labor free, is it more cost effective to DIY than to buy a fabricated system?
