That's what I don't get!

These guys would never accept anything less than a time slip as "proof of performance" on a drag strip, but they'll do all kinds of nonsensical things when it comes to measuring MPG.

Domman: you're right - they deserve props for talking about fuel economy to a demographic that might look at you like you've grown a another head for raising the topic otherwise. Tuning for efficiency is only going to grow in stature, so we'll just have to hope that the quality of the info grows with it.
