Except the only relationship between the company "Toyoda" and the company "Toyota" is the family name.
Toyoda was never affiliated with Toyota, that I remember reading about. They are, in fact, two completely different companies.
Nissan/Datsun on the other hand, Nissan
acquired DAT Motorcars, INC (I believe that was the name), and the name of the Datson model was changed to DatSUN, to honor the image of the sun on the Japanese flag.
Datsun models were sold in the US under the marquee at the time because it was thought that Nissan models would sell poorly in this market due to Nissan's military production involvement in Japan.
