Toyota's roots are in the Toyoda Power Loom Corporation,a creation of the Toyoda family which still heads the company today.

...it's an "old" versus "new" thing:

Toyoda = old name; Toyota = new name

Datsun = old name; Nissan = new name

Except the only relationship between the company "Toyoda" and the company "Toyota" is the family name.

Toyoda was never affiliated with Toyota, that I remember reading about. They are, in fact, two completely different companies.

Nissan/Datsun on the other hand, Nissan acquired DAT Motorcars, INC (I believe that was the name), and the name of the Datson model was changed to DatSUN, to honor the image of the sun on the Japanese flag.

Datsun models were sold in the US under the marquee at the time because it was thought that Nissan models would sell poorly in this market due to Nissan's military production involvement in Japan.

...I've seen pre-war pictures of Toyoda labeled 3/4-size Fords, apparently built under license, hence the association.

I can't honestly say for sure that 'da and 'ta were never affiliated, just that I'm not aware of any affiliation (besides the family name).

Finally found a reference to the Cd of the type 51 open wheel GP car from Bernard's book: .74Cd and .96 CdA (m square) A CdA roughly the same as a Chevy Blazer. Not unexpected for an open wheel car.

I'd like to see a Cd estimation of those type 57 Gs that won two LeMans.

Bugatti Type 51 (1933) Cd 0.74 CdA 0.96 Simon
Bugatti Veyron Cd 0.36 CdA 0.745 Ulven
Bugatti EB110, 1993 Cd 0.30 CdA 0.52 Rüdiger C.
