Not long after I moved here, I walked to a casual job, and then was a bit puzzled that the hardware store was closing early. We were having the worst storm in 50 years.

Notes to those contemplating cycling:
Fitness improves quickly withtout much effort, especially if you are distracted by traffic instead of just your own body.
Practise bike-handling skills away from cars, but get sharp. The back brake is there to tell you when the front brake has almost lifted the back end. Use it lightly, as an indicator or emergency brake only, or as the one to overheat first on descents.
Use a helmet-mounted mirror to stay aware of traffic.
Sometimes, it is best to pace a single car, hanging just off the back corner in a safe zone.
