Too cold here most of the time to drive barefoot!

I just try to keep a good comfortable position on the pedal. Sometimes my boot treads get caught in a bad spot and I gotta lift the foot to reposition.

One thing I found is new shoes hurt FE, since all your feel for the pedal is gone till they break in. Thankfully I only get new shoes once every 2-3 years.
