Just back from a trip to the SW USA and rented a Toyota Corolla and got 40.3 average indicated and this seems right looking at the gas purchased over 2300 mile trip.
Back home in UK the wife is getting 45.5 mpg out of her late 2009 Subaru Forester diesel.
