I couldn't agree more dcb. It does seem like the more idiot proof we make machines, the exponentially greater number of idiots we create.

However when it comes to vehicles and driving, I would like to see the vehicle itself made to be of an inherently hypermiling design. I'm not sure if it is possible for most of the people I see driving on the road daily act more stupidly and with obviously no comprehension whatsoever of how to drive efficiently.

On occasion, especially when gas prices spike, I will rarely seen another car on the road that seems to be driven with some understanding of the benefits of extended coasting. Of course the other 99% pass you with the engine roaring only to slam on the brakes at the next red light, which was red when they hit the gas to swerve over in front of you so you have to slow down to avoid stopping altogether, when you could have passed through the light at your average speed otherwise.
