I haven't mowed my yard since November 2008. I got rid of the last of my grass May last year and got rid of the mower and weedeater the following month. My yard is now mostly either food producing plants, native plants, or mulch.
This type of landscaping is becoming increasingly popular here in Florida and is very much encouraged by the local governments.
