If you use sheep to mow the lawn, bring chickens by about 4 days later. They will distribute the fertilizer to get the fly maggots out of it before the flies hatch, leave some high-nitrogen deposits of their own, and take out the dandylions.
I use a plug-in mower I got for $5 at a garage sale. No guarantee, but it is fine after 3 years and two sharpenings. Very nice. The slightly balky weed eater was $2. The cord, however, cost real money. A friend who makes firewood says that he is almost twice as productive using an electric chain saw for work around the yard, even with the cord to deal with. It still beats gas and maintenance. He plans to run one off his golf cart battery for field work.
