Your OP has no pictures?

You should lubricate the clutch cable (with some motor oil?) -- a smooth action on the clutch helps you drive smoothly. I had an '87 Golf, and after disconnecting the cable from the engine/transmission and pour some oil down into it; working the clutch to get it to flow down into the cable. After this, it should work muuuuuch better...
