There are two possible issues with stopping the coolant flow through the heater core on a Metro engine. Not life or death issues, but not ideal either.
1. It acts as the main bypass when the thermostat is closed. You should still have the little hoses that go to the throttle body to act as a bypass. That might be enough.
2. You will lose the heat to the intake manifold when you have the climate control heat turned off.
I don't know when you should change the oil, but you'll hurt nothing by changing it too soon.
I wouldn't worry too much about the intake tube. WOT should be OK, just listen for pinging or other weird noises. Like your engine falling out!
