Why on earth would you think that? The "gyro" is actually a high-speed flywheel that takes the place of the battery in a conventional hybrid. It's not even connected to the IC engine (execpt through the track), but to the electric motor/generators driving the front wheels.

The advantage of the flywheel for electrical storage is that it's not rate-limited, which allows much higher currents than an equivalent battery pack could deliver, and thus much more assist/braking power. This of course is a definite plus for racing applications.
