I have to wonder what kind of wear a lighter fly wheel is going to cause to the transmision, yes I know that is not the exact topic of this thread but it is related to the topic.
The pulses of power that the fly wheel is evening out could be related to the pulses of power from an air impact wrench, the heavier the fly wheel the more consistent the speed of the crank shaft is going to be, that is also why clutch plates have springs, to even out those pulses to help protect the rest the drive train, that is also the idea behind a dual mass fly wheel as I understand it, to give a lighter fly wheel for a more responsive engine while evening out the pulses of power as much as possible.
