Interestingly, there is an effort by some tire manufacturers to wean the tire ingredient list away from petroleum-based products... I can't recall which manufacturer it was ... one of the big ones ... which already has a racing tire on the market made without any oil, and claims to be testing a consumer tire made similarly to be on the shelves in 2012...

Even if they do not eliminate all petroleum products in their tire products, most manufacturers are looking at reducing the %age they use in order to protect themselves against the fluctuating oil prices anyway...
