Can you move the vent assembly towards the rear of the car some, maybe 1", so that the vent bar and the rod from the actuator are in alignment vertically? If so, you might be able to put a screw or rivet through the open hole in the vent bar so that it actuates directly. Hopefully the actuator rod has enough play/movement to allow for the front-back movement of the vent bar.
