Turns out that Snap On tools bought the rights to use GM's code reading program in their more delux scan tool, so where I could use my scan gauge to read the normal code, the Snap On scan tool can read the GM only code, at a cost of $30 at a local repair shop.
My problem was the fuse for the radiator fan was blown... from the radiator fan wire coming loose and shorting on the exhaust manifold, so $4 later I had a new fuse and the wire taped up and the service light is now off, slick way to find a problem but costly as well.
