Saturn SL2 service engine light rest help needed.
I'm working on a 1998 Saturn SL2 that has both a service engine light and a check engine light, the check engine light is what goes on when the ECU has a code stored, I hooked up my scan gauge and reset the codes and the check engine light is still off but the service engine light is on without any error codes so it would seem that it's a timed light to remind you to change your oil or whatever and I can only assume that there is a button or jumper or something to reset it and the rest of the internet is failing me in finding an answer.

dunno. When I did a swap to manual (with a manual computer) on a sw2, that light came on. It turns out that it was on because the ECU was expecting to see an upshift light on one of it's leads (automatic dashboards don't have an upshift light), so I fixed it with a resistor at the harness. Maybe scan for lights that should be on at powerup that aren't.

enhanced GM scan tool
your scan tool is GENERIC OBD2
it can not view ENHANCED GM Powertrain or
ANY other system in the car
one of the OTHER systems is UN happy - you will need a GM ENHANCED scan tool to see what it may be
many / all decent independent repair shops will have this ability for your car
======================
http://www.obd-2.com/gmpida.htm
a list of possible GM PIDs in ENHANCED POWERTRAIN
your car does not have all of these -
none of these are available to a GENERIC OBD2 scan tool , such as the one you are using ...
that tool , while not very user friendly is relatively inexpensive and will get to the systems you need to see for the price of a trip to the "dealer"

Ryland -
I think mwebb is right. The ScanGauge can't access proprietary codes outside of the OBD-II protocol requirements. I call those "deep codes" for lack of a better term. I would go over to saturfans.com because then can tell you how to reset the ECU/PCM. Here is one way :
Help with rough idle(I've looked elsewhere but can't find similar) - SaturnFans Forums

Pull the PCM B fuse and wait. When you start the car the light should be off and even if you have a dead cylinder it will take a bit for the SES to come back on.

OldNuc is your man. When I have done this the car has had trouble turning over the first time. Clearing the memory means that the ECU/PCM needs to go through a learning cycle, but I have just driven normally and it seems to satisfy itself after awhile.

Disconnect the battery for 10-30min reconnect and start the car the code should be cleared, if it comes back then mess with it.

Turns out that Snap On tools bought the rights to use GM's code reading program in their more delux scan tool, so where I could use my scan gauge to read the normal code, the Snap On scan tool can read the GM only code, at a cost of $30 at a local repair shop.
My problem was the fuse for the radiator fan was blown... from the radiator fan wire coming loose and shorting on the exhaust manifold, so $4 later I had a new fuse and the wire taped up and the service light is now off, slick way to find a problem but costly as well.

Snapon does not have the exclusive rights to GM enhanced -
in fact
the Snapon version is not as complete as the AutoEnginuity version
AE just released their latest Update , version 8.4
Downloads a free update to current owners , the AE version has SpeedTracer version 5.o again too ...
unlike the bi annual snapon updates at
$500 per and the snapon software does not have anything comparable to
SpeedTracer

I stand corrected, but the fact is everyone in town that I talked to said that the only tool they knew of that could read it was the snap on code reader, one of the people at the auto parts store said if I could wait a few days that I could even barrow his, that the snap on code reader is common enough that people have them instead of having to go to a GM dealer.
