Soulster needs to maintain visibility of his high-up rear lights, and it's easier to "frame" the hatch in a Kamm-spoiler than to have it extend out (right?!?!?!). That's why I think the air would be ok with this compromise :

The issue is the lights, I think that if I can keep it in the hatch area (or just out to the inside side of the lights) I can make it work.

Nice diagram!

I think that the side gaps (by the lights) will have detached air flow, but it should rejoin in time to come off the back at the right angel. Will this help much or would it be better to remove the sides altogether and just have the top piece?

I *might* be able to make a cover over the lights that is clear (Plexiglas) but I will have to see how badly it distorts or refracts the light. It would also add to the complexity of the build (two materials, joints, not being able to hide the supports as well, etc). But it would allow us to go out to the edge of the car.
