The Rabbit Pickup was pretty neat, but I challenge the notion that it is a "clean diesel". It was made in the 70s (maybe up to the early 80s?) and diesels from that era are anything but clean.
Efficient, yes. Clean, no. Also expect to be passed by stock 1956 Bugs, as the little NA diesels from that era suffered from a significant power deficit.
Now get one of those and stick a modern or modern-ish TDI drivetrain in it, and you're starting to get clean and reasonably (or very!) powerful.
