Honestly, if you are doing single sided work... I prefer through hole myself. Just seems more solid.
I do suppose SMT can be a bit more hassle to assemble.
But honestly, if someone wanted to adapt to a double sided... Reworking the board to SMT themselves wouldn't be too hard I would think. The new PCB software is fully free. Which. Is awesome.
