Quite simply the main reasons for using smd components (automated manufacture and space saving) are not an issue for a diy motor controller. I'm not trying to be argumentative but I simply don't see the point. From a home construction point of view I would much prefer through hole.

A toaster oven works wonders if you have a solder mask layer, transparencies and an exact o knife.

Honestly, if you are doing single sided work... I prefer through hole myself. Just seems more solid.
I do suppose SMT can be a bit more hassle to assemble.
But honestly, if someone wanted to adapt to a double sided... Reworking the board to SMT themselves wouldn't be too hard I would think. The new PCB software is fully free. Which. Is awesome.
Man. This has me on the edge of my seat... *munches on shrimp-potato-puffs*

Are referring to Eagle? I know they bumped the board size limit a few years back. I never really played with it a lot though.
Through hole is perfectly fine, sometimes it is just cool to see how compact you can get something. Which would only really come into play with a motorcycle conversion or smaller.
I've done a only a couple SMT projects, but they were neat to do.
And with 290ish parts ,I believe was referenced earlier, it could be interesting.

No, there was a very recent new PCB program with NO noticeable limits so far... I've poked around in it a bit but have been limited a bit by buisyness recently (nothing like 16 units to keep one buisy).
Outright, full, free. Outputs gerber too.
GUI seems pretty decent... which is rare on PCB design programs in the free/cheap realm.
It's called DesignSpark PCB ( DesignSpark PCB | DesignSpark )
Though, not sure if Paul has picked it up entirely, he seemed to like it when I posted her up xD And I think hes been working with it. It's the best free PCB software I've seen--counting stupid board-manufacturer locked ones of which it is not.

Yes, it's awesome. I've fully converted to using that now. I have no complaints whatsoever. I send out gerbers, and they send me pcbs! hurray!

Glad to hear ^.^
I know DreamSparks angle in the matter. If you use the built in BOM, any items from their database give the part numbers for their sponsors parts. ^.^ Its a pretty agreeable and creative business model.
We get free PCB software that doesn't suck. They get some good, subtle, and yet actually convinent to many users advertising. Which seems like it should work them.

I had to type the BOM by hand though, that was the only annoying thing to me.

housekeeping power supply
I can help with your power supply. Let me know the input voltage range, out put voltages, currents and number of channels. They have to be isolated of course. At this power level ( a few watts ) I will design a flyback. This is what I do for a living.

Awesome! You mean a DC power supply to test the controller? I was using 60v worth of batteries today, and it was only reading 23v on the volt meter. hahaha. They are really really crappy and old.
