Sadly that won't work as you need an isolated converter. You could make a buck converter with that old controller but it would not be isolated from the traction pack and going from 120v to 12v would be at the lower limit of that design. Sad as it is to say its not really worth doing homebrew. You can pickup a 600w dc dc for less than 100usd these days. Or look at modifying a powersupply.
