I bought my 2.0L gas Jetta in 2002. The MK3s weren't that old, and the diesels had relatively low mileage and expense. I should I gotten one, as now, they are 9 years older, have 200k more miles and are no cheaper to buy. However, I was 19 and living at home. "You don't want a diesel, they're smelly, noisy, black, sooty, and you can only fill up on the highway." I didn't know any better. I should have done my research. However, I did score a spotless 4-year old car with 32,000 miles and a year of factory warranty left. Still should have gotten a TDI had I know then how concerned with fuel economy I would be now.
