When deciding between 2 options that the OP presented on the same truck with 2 engines very similar mpg. EXCEPT: the v8 can be modded to be more efficiently by using a programmer that would get him better MPG than the smaller 6cyl. he was called out on his way of thinking.

Yes a smaller car is better choice for everyone so is not driving at all. I had a discussion with a family member yesterday trying to tell me to sell my truck and get a 4cyl. instead. I told him to sell his house and stop commuting 60 miles each way to work and move closer to his job. I drive less then 10 miles a day who is more fuel concious me or him?

The original poster might be in the same situation it may be a first truck or a thousand other reasons he wants the truck. Its better to keep someone interested in economy then dump on them. Going into the forum he knew the truck was a bad choice for efficiencey, if not then i got nothing...
