That's the most interesting, err, challenge to heating with a wood or coal stove.

I have relatives in NH who keep their wood stove in the basement and let the warm air come up into the house through floor vents. Works pretty well but one end of the house is still a little warmer.

We have a wood stove in our 'great room', which, combined with a very open floor plan, keeps most of the house relatively evenly heated. The lower level is another matter entirely!
