Congratulations on joining the Metro owner's fraternity. I have no doubt that you will see the 50 mpg mark on a regular basis once you get the car sorted out. I would check to see that the computer is operating in closed loop by checking the coolant temp sensor ( green plug on the throttle body). Remember that if the computer does not sense the right temperature, it will never start reading the O2 sensor and fuel economy will suffer. I'd also see where your tire pressures are at and change the transmission oil to Pennzoil Synchromesh. You're very close. Fixing the minor things will likely put you over the top.

No green technology will ever make a substantive environmental impact until it is economically viable for most people to use it. This must be from a reduction in net cost of the new technology, not an increase in the cost of the old technology through taxation
