La Tortuga - '92 Geo Metro XFI

Another XFI Joins the Party

Hi everyone,

my first ever ecomodder post (I am pretty sure), after lurking for a couple years.
A Sincere thanks to everyone who posts here, such incredible and invaluable and inspirational information. there are a pretty amazing group of individuals here. And my new car is a direct result of everyone's participation in this forum.

My success story is that I bough an 92 XFI.
I've had her for a month now, and beginning to becoming familiar. Had a few upgrades performed so far, including most notably new front axles and 4 tires.

She's super fun to drive, and I'm hashing a general plan for what is to come:

1. Choose an appropriate name. it might be turtle related, let me know if I'm stepping on anyone's toes.

2. to build a complete aero body kit, ala aerocivic. starting with a boat tail. As I get up and running with this project I'll be sure to keep a thread in the aero section of the forum.

3. learn more about engine mechanics, and have my ride super dialed in. this is my weak point, so I am excited to do some wrenching and gain some understanding. I'll be sure to be asking some questions of those of you here that know a heck of a lot more than I do. I appreciate your consultations in advance.

4. have fun while doing all of the above

Thanks!

Congrats on the find. I would love to have XFi cams and 5-speed tranny in my 95 Metro. You have a lot of hard work ahead of you, but you are starting off with a really good platform.

Congrats on the XFi find, Delmar & welcome to the forum!

Looking forward to watching your project.

(And feel free to use turtle-related names. No copyright issues I know of...)

La Tortuga - '92 Geo Metro XFI

Updates

soo... first off, I arrived at a name: "La Tortuga" !!

I've entered her into the garage here, and next step is to update all the fuel logs.

Today, I reached a milestone, my first 50mpg tank!

Yes, I rounded up from a calculated 49.995
It seems like I had to work a bit harder to get that 50mpg than I thought I would have. I've been driving quite consciously.
I flirted with 50 for the past several tanks, all 46-49 range.
Does this sound about right for a 92 XFI with a rebuilt head? (previous owner) I imagine I should do a compression test.
what sealed the deal today was a higher percentage of all highway miles, averaging about 57mph or so... VERY slow for a So Cal freeway.

Now I've got some pretty good baseline numbers to reference as I start incorporating the slew of aeromods that I have planned.

Congratulations on joining the Metro owner's fraternity. I have no doubt that you will see the 50 mpg mark on a regular basis once you get the car sorted out. I would check to see that the computer is operating in closed loop by checking the coolant temp sensor ( green plug on the throttle body). Remember that if the computer does not sense the right temperature, it will never start reading the O2 sensor and fuel economy will suffer. I'd also see where your tire pressures are at and change the transmission oil to Pennzoil Synchromesh. You're very close. Fixing the minor things will likely put you over the top.

(Note: the car sees 100% city driving and is EPA rated at 37 mpg city)

Delmar: high 40's sounds about right for moderate city use.

Congrats on the first 50 tank!
