Light? Zero chance.

Small efficient motor? Only if you live in Europe They're offering 2 diesel mills with start-stop in this platform across the pond. 6 engine choices, actually:

Gasoline/petrol:
1.2 L @ 70 hp
1.2 L @ 86 hp
1.4 L @ 100 hp
1.6 L @ 115 hp

Diesel, featuring Start/Stop technology:
1.3 L @ 75 hp
1.3 L @ 95 hp

However...

GM North America has stated in the past that this new "Aveo" would get class-leading fuel economy. (They say lots of things though.)

I could potentially see them doing an "ECO" version of this car, using the same 1.4 turbo and tall geared 6-spd manual or automatic that they use in the Cruze ECO. Maybe they'll throw the other aero tricks at it, like the Cruze ECO:

-- slightly lowered,
-- variable automated grille block,
-- aero wheels.

We may know more in a week or so when the North American market production version of the Sonic shows up at the Detroit auto show.
