I had a 2000 Elantra 2.0 auto for a few months before I got the Jeep. With moderate hypermiling (DWB, etc), I got 18 - 19 city (lots of short trips, etc). In the same driving, I get 12 - 13 from the Jeep.
I was always annoyed at how bad the mileage was in the Elantra compared to what I expected (don't know what it got on the highway, never did much highway driving with it). I figured out the MAF sensor was crudded up, and cleaned it, which picked up some power, and probably would have helped mpg a bit too. However, it was totaled shortly after, so I don't know how much of a difference it made.

Call me crazy, but I actually try for mpg with this Jeep:
Typical driving: Back in Rochester for school, driving is 60 - 70% city
