It bugs me a bit that programs like this always talk about cars that are coming, but they are too expensive or the batteries aren't quite right yet.
It's crazy that I can bolt together a cycle in my garage that is zero emissions, or that somebody can mod a Geo to get 100 MPG, but we can't go out and buy a really decent car.
We really need a Model-T of the Future, and I have the feeling it is going to come out of an ecomodder's garage.

Seems to me, one could start with an off-the-shelf dune buggy or somesuch, then mod it with the best of Hucho and ideas/hardware shamelessly taken from a Prius, etc.. Aim for ~1,200 lbs. empty weight.
For a basic commuter vehicle (1 person aboard, plus a bit of space for briefcase or groceries) use a Streamliner HPV shell, add electrical drive and current batteries. A Streamliner should go probably 4X as far as a typical electrical bicycle, due to radically reduced drag.
