I bought the most fuel efficient vehicle sold in the US that meets my needs. I rarely use my vehicle for commuting. I use it mostly for hauling. I've already hauled 18 truckloads of mulch this year. Also, all the musical gear I need for gigs fits in one load in my present vehicle. I would need multiple trips to haul the same gear in any vehicle I examined that was more fuel efficient. In many situations, a bigger less efficient vehicle will actually use less fuel overall than a more efficient vehicle simply because it requires less trips.
