Jesse,
My commute (53km each way) is a mixture of urban, highway and motorway. I use the motorway (110kph, slightly longer) to avoid 12km of highway (80kph) that has lots of traffic lights.
Although driving further and faster on the motorway hurts FE, it dosen't hurt it nearly as badly as those traffic lights do.

I bought the most fuel efficient vehicle sold in the US that meets my needs. I rarely use my vehicle for commuting. I use it mostly for hauling. I've already hauled 18 truckloads of mulch this year. Also, all the musical gear I need for gigs fits in one load in my present vehicle. I would need multiple trips to haul the same gear in any vehicle I examined that was more fuel efficient. In many situations, a bigger less efficient vehicle will actually use less fuel overall than a more efficient vehicle simply because it requires less trips.

That's why I like the wagon approach.
You can get lots of stuff in them, while fuel economy is comparable to a hatch or sedan.

If I need to haul more, heavier or bigger stuff, I'll borrow or rent a trailer .

If I were to ever move I would not use this for that, I would rent a truck or something.

As was stated earlier about commuting less. I WISH I had my old commute.

From 2004-2009 I literally drove 8 miles round trip to work. But, I also couldn't care less about fuel economy. Thanks to the economy the first job I could land was 50 miles away, I don't commute because I like living in BFE.

I think most of us here wish to reduce gas used every year, hence why we want higher FE numbers. Now thats not to say I would rather drive 10 miles to get 45mpg vs driving 2 miles and only getting 20mpg. Thats a no brainer.

Also, even if I worked close to home, I am so obsessed with using less gas that I would prefer to get at least 40mpg.

Back to topic. To alter you driving route you could avoid left turns. Works very well at the States. So plan your work routes so that you do only right turns.

simply shutting your car down before you get to the turn as well as leaving it off while waiting on left turns is the same isn't it?

But right turns are more reliably turns you can perform without stopping.

Agree with maximizing right turns. It also tends to be safer.

A friend of mine suggested the same sort of thing to me. I tried going to the next exit on the motorway, then approaching work from the east instead of the west, only making left hand turns (we drive on the left) and avoiding three traffic lights.
On a good day with light traffic it was fine, but the traffic density is so variable, it wasn't worth it when averaged out.
As Odin observed, If I'm stuck at the lights turning right I can turn off the engine.
