A friend of mine suggested the same sort of thing to me. I tried going to the next exit on the motorway, then approaching work from the east instead of the west, only making left hand turns (we drive on the left) and avoiding three traffic lights.
On a good day with light traffic it was fine, but the traffic density is so variable, it wasn't worth it when averaged out.
As Odin observed, If I'm stuck at the lights turning right I can turn off the engine.
