That bypass hose is a nightmare to get to. I don't know why anyone would go in there and not replace it.
As far as the 2 tranny coolers, 93 - 97 got the second one if it had a V8, a tow package, or both. Under heavy load, these need a lot of cooling. Tranny + too much heat = dead tranny.
