Is it a tranny or oil cooler? I assumed the lines going into the rad were the trans cooler lines, and that oily mess of a cooler in the grille was for motor oil. Not uncommon on SUVs of the 90s to have some way of cooling oil, our old 98 GMC Jimmy had both of them in the rad though.
I was thinking of tying one open slat in front of the fan, one open one in front of the cooler. I've experience how temperamental the Jeep trans is about temp. Like, not having OD when the trans is cold, lol. It needs a flush, should clear up it's quirks.
I'll keep note of exactly where it sits tomorrow, but I'm not about to tear down to the thermostat again. Unless I can get at it with out pulling off the accessory bracket, I won't touch it. Had to tear it down to change the water pump to change the bypass hose, not fun.
I haven't put the block back on. Getting a week's worth of driving averaged into the onboard computer, and will reset and see if there's a difference next week.

They're both tranny coolers. The lines run Tranny -> Rad cooler -> Aux cooler (the one up front) -> Tranny
EDIT: Overdrive and torque converter lockup are locked out by the computer when the tranny fluid is below 50* F. That's normal. As far as the t-stat, it can be changed without pulling that damn accessory bracket. It's a little tricky, and a bit messy, but I did change mine a few weeks ago and didn't pull the bracket. The bracket is an absolute PITA though, as I had it off twice over the summer (once to do the plenum gasket, then the water pump went 3 days later )

Ugh, the bolts behind pullies... Why? Unnecessarily hard, but whoever did the water pump last (it's been dealer/shop serviced it's whole life) didn't bother replacing the bypass hose. It had swelled up over a half-inch in diameter, and looked ready to pop. Of course, Chrysler does provide a hole to get at that upper clamp... If you had magical pliers.
It's like they're taunting you. "OH, we'll make it almost possible to do this the easy way. Almost."
2 tranny coolers, wow.

That bypass hose is a nightmare to get to. I don't know why anyone would go in there and not replace it.
As far as the 2 tranny coolers, 93 - 97 got the second one if it had a V8, a tow package, or both. Under heavy load, these need a lot of cooling. Tranny + too much heat = dead tranny.

For such a small SUV, with such little power and torque, I'm surprised Chrysler went through such lengths. Not even the GM full size trucks/SUVs had extra coolers standard. Thankful though.
