most domestic GM cars of those years has the fan coming on between 220 and 228 degrees.

If you live in a nice climate like here in so cal, one solution would also be to improve the radiator's ability to cool with less air by reducing the amount of antifreeze in the system.

A 25/75 mix of antifreeze and distilled water is what I run. The thicker viscosity of antifreeze tends slow heat transfer. Also, the thinner viscosity of water helps improve economy by reducing the amount of effort needed to pump the coolant.
