I've been testing out some new routes to work for the past several weeks. The old route seemed like an obvious choice: a four lane road that runs alongside a rail yard that guarantees no cross traffic from the one side, but it has too much low speed village driving.
The new route is more hectic, with higher speeds, much more traffic, and lower mpg. But it's undeniably a faster way to get to work. So, I'll be studying the route, timing the lights, learning the lean burn engagement points and where to change lanes or shift to neutral. MPG has been highly variable so far: 50-70mpg in conditions that would net me 65-80mpg on the old route. Sometimes it seems like I get up to 50mph just as the light is about to turn red, and other times, it's all well-timed coasts to a stop.
In addition to taking less time, the new route is also a shorter distance, so the mileage penalty isn't quite as bad as it sounds.
