18.7 miles from my house to work. 37.4 miles back and forth. Last tank in the S cart (1991 Ford Escort Wagon LX) was 34 MPG averaged city / highway. So under $4 a day with gas at $3.56 a gallon. Trying hard to get to 1 gallon a day (or less).

Question. Installed a vacuum gauge in my Escort. Been driving the speed limit or lower on the country roads I travel, 45 mph. The vacuum gauge reads high in 3rd gear at around 40-45 mph. If I upshift to 4th gear (OD) and the torque converter locks up it drops the vacuum reading down. Perhaps I'm having a brain fart here but I'm not sure what's best to do. Keep it in 3rd gear at 40-45 mph with a high vacuum reading OR drop it into 4th gear resulting in lower revs but also lower vacuum? Sorry, didn't want to start a whole new thread on the subject.
