The easiest and cheapest solution is indeed to burn it ... so sadly that's what happens most often.
Though that can be done a lot more efficiently than in an old if not ancient car.
In Belgium :
87% gets processed into biodiesel - so it still gets burned inefficiently.
11% is burned to produce electricity and/or steam - the combination being the most efficient.
2% is being re-used in industrial lubes and soaps.
After processing, waste vegetable oil could even be re-used for the same purpose, but EU regulations forbid recycling for human food or feedstock applications.
We've had a bit of troubles with some
greasy criminals mixing engine oils etc. into the feedstock.
